System and Software Support Specialist
JOB TITLE: System and Software Support Specialist
DEPARTMENT: Computing Administration
REPORTS TO: IT Manager, Mathematics
Reporting to the IT Manager in the School of Mathematics, the incumbent will provide system administration for the Mathematics Computing group. Responsibilities will include supporting the daily operation, maintenance and security of workstations, servers, and other devices, as well as participating in and leading other projects to help achieve the goals of the Mathematics Computing group, and broader IT initiatives across the campus.
- Support the daily operation, maintenance, and security of workstations, servers, and other network peripherals in a mixed operating system environment (e.g. Linux, Mac, Windows).
- Develop and manage web and non-web based applications.
- Provides support to scholars and staff. Participate in and/or lead campus computing projects.
- Provides on-call IT support during non-business hours and/or holiday breaks on a rotational basis with other staff members.
- Under the direction of the IT Manager, assist in maintaining the IT infrastructure of the School of Mathematics.
All other duties and responsibilities, as assigned by the Computer Manager, Mathematics
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate ability to perform system administration tasks on RedHat Linux systems. In addition to basic skill in administering Macintosh OS X and Microsoft Windows systems.
- Adept with version control and configuration management technologies (e.g. Git, Puppet).
- Proficiency in at least one scripting language (e.g. Bash, Python, Perl).
Education, Experience and Knowledge
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent academic experience is required.
- At least 4 years of practical work experience preferred, including 2-3 years of hands on system administration experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, preferably Springdale Linux.
- Familiarity with Drupal and MySQL databases.
- Working knowledge of R, Julia, Mathematica, MATLAB, Maple and/or TeX strongly preferred.
- Ideal candidate will also possess strong communication skills, prior academic experience and an aptitude for quickly learning new technologies.
